How we test

We drive around the UK with regular phones, testing how well each network performs in real life. Our data is collected by Streetwave, the UK's leading independent mobile network measurement company. You can find out about licensing the data at https://streetwave.co.uk.

At every spot we test, we check three things: download speed (at least 5 Mbps), upload speed (at least 1.5 Mbps), and response time (under 50 ms). If a network hits all three, it passes.

We then group results by postcode sector and work out what percentage of tests each network passed. That's your coverage score, a simple way to see how each network performs where you live. Over time, we're working towards testing every road in the country so we can get even more precise. For now, we only show areas where we've done at least 100 tests in 100 different spots, so you can trust the results.

All our tests are taken outdoors, so think of the results as the best signal available in your area. Your experience indoors can vary depending on things like building materials, which floor you're on, and how close you are to a window. The Networks are continually updating and improving in order to provide better expereince for you, the customer, as a result the data here may not reflect your current experience.

FAQs

FAQs
How up-to-date is this?
We use the most recent test result for every location. We drop anything older than two years to keep things fresh, but we also keep enough data to give you a fair picture across different times and conditions.
Why are there only four networks shown?
The UK has four mobile networks: EE, Three, O2, and Vodafone. Every other provider (like giffgaff, Tesco Mobile, or Sky Mobile) runs on one of these four. Pop your provider into the dropdown and we'll show you which network yours uses.
How is this different from the coverage maps on network websites?
We test networks using real phones on real roads, so our results show what you'll actually experience day to day. Network coverage maps are based on predictions and modelling, while ours are based on millions of real measurements.
What does the coverage score mean?
It's the percentage of tests a network passed in your postcode sector. A higher score means more consistent, reliable performance in that area.
Can I trust the results for my exact address?
Our results cover postcode sectors, so they give you a great picture of general performance in your area. Your experience at home could vary depending on the quantity and age of data we have in your area.
What counts as a "pass"?
A network passes a test if it hits all three of these at once: a download speed of at least 5 Mbps, an upload speed of at least 1.5 Mbps, and a response time under 50 ms. These are based on Ofcom's benchmarks for good mobile performance.
Will my coverage be exactly the same at home?
Our tests are taken outdoors, so think of the results as the best signal available in your area. Your experience indoors can vary depending on things like building materials, which floor you're on, and how close you are to a window.
